Full-time Equivalent (FTE) Calculator
Calculate FTE from total hours or from per-person hours. Compare headcount to full-time equivalent.
Use the Full-time Equivalent (FTE) Calculator
Set full-time hours per week, then enter total hours or per-person hours. FTE is calculated.
Standard hours
Full-time hours per week (e.g. 40). Then enter total hours or per-person hours.
Results
FTE = Total hours ÷ Full-time hours. Headcount is the number of people; FTE is the equivalent number of full-time workers.
What this metric means
FTE standardises labour into full-time equivalents. It's used for capacity planning, benchmarking, and reporting when you have part-time or variable hours.
How to calculate it
FTE = Total hours worked (in the period) ÷ Full-time hours per week. If using a table, sum each person's hours first, then divide by full-time hours.
How to improve the metric
FTE is descriptive—you don't 'improve' it in isolation. Use it to align headcount with demand and to compare productivity across teams or periods.
Common mistakes
Using different full-time definitions; including leave or unpaid hours inconsistently; or mixing weekly and annual hours without normalising.
How to interpret your result
Compare FTE to headcount to see part-time mix. Use FTE for ratios (e.g. revenue per FTE) when you have mixed hours.
