What this metric means

Attrition rate shows what share of your workforce left in a given period. It’s useful for capacity planning, cost of turnover, and spotting trends in retention.

How to improve the metric

Common levers: pay and benefits, career development, workload and culture, exit interviews to identify causes, and better hiring so fit is stronger from day one.

FAQs

What is attrition rate?
Attrition rate is the proportion of your workforce that left during a period, usually expressed as a percentage. It’s (employees who left ÷ average headcount) × 100.
How do I get average headcount?
Typically (employees at start + employees at end) ÷ 2. If you have a more accurate average (e.g. monthly headcounts), you can enter it in the optional override field.
What’s a good attrition rate?
Benchmarks vary by industry, role, and region. The calculator doesn’t set a target; use it to establish your baseline and track trends. High or rising attrition may warrant attention.
What’s annualised attrition?
If your period is shorter than a year (e.g. one quarter), annualised attrition estimates what the rate would be over 12 months. Formula: 1 − (1 − period rate)^(12/period months).
Should I include voluntary and involuntary separately?
You can track them separately for internal analysis. The calculator uses total leavers for the main rate; you can run it once for voluntary and once for involuntary if you have the split.
